RT Journal Article SR Electronic T1 Using human tissue: when do we need consent? JF Journal of Medical Ethics JO J Med Ethics FD BMJ Publishing Group Ltd and Institute of Medical Ethics SP 759 OP 761 DO 10.1136/medethics-2011-100043 VO 37 IS 12 A1 Lisa Parker YR 2011 UL http://jme.bmj.com/content/37/12/759.abstract AB Identifiable excess surgical tissue is an important resource for medical research but we have become overly restrictive about consent requirements. I suggest we devolve consent to ethics committees for ordinary research projects involving human tissue, retaining the requirement for explicit consent only for those sensitive research situations where there is significant risk of harm to individual interests in privacy.
